HIKING IN ISTRIA
(PARENZANA TRAIL)

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS
Unleash your adventurous spirit on the Parenzana, Istria’s most iconic trail that follows the rugged, winding path of a long-abandoned narrow-gauge railway. This isn't just a walk; it’s a trek through the heart of the Istrian wilderness, where you’ll conquer dramatic stone viaducts, navigate dark tunnels, and rise above the clouds to reach medieval hilltop fortresses.
We will hike the section from Grožnjan to Oprtalj which is widely considered the most spectacular part of the Parenzana Trail, featuring a high concentration of historic engineering marvels and panoramic views of the Mirna River valley.
Accompanied by your guide, you will navigate a series of historic tunnels—including Kalcini, the trail’s highest point—and cross massive stone viaducts like Završje and Antonci that soar above emerald valleys and vineyards.
Here is what makes the towns along this route so special:
Grožnjan
Known as the "City of Artists," this hilltop gem captivates visitors with its labyrinth of cobblestone streets filled with over 20 creative galleries and the constant echo of classical music.
Završje
This hauntingly beautiful, semi-abandoned medieval town offers a step back in time, featuring ancient stone ruins and a leaning bell tower that have made it a favorite location for international film productions.
Oprtalj
Often called one of Istria’s best-kept secrets, this town greets you with its iconic row of towering cypress trees and a colorful loggia that boasts some of the most stunning panoramic views over the Mirna River valley.
